2 dead after car hits guardrail on NJ Turnpike in Newark

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Two people died Sunday afternoon after a single-vehicle collision on the New Jersey Turnpike in Newark, according to News 12.

The fatal accident took place on the southbound lanes of the western spur, near milepost 107.1, at about 4:13 p.m.

An early investigation by the state police found a 69-year-old New York resident was driving a Toyota Prius when they veered off the right side of the roadway and hit a guardrail. Moments after, it the Prius then traveled back across all lanes and collided with the center concrete barrier.

The driver and an unidentified passenger in a rear passenger seat both died from their injuries.

Two left lanes were shut down for nearly three hours during the emergency response and investigation.
