Woman fatally hit by NJ Transit train near Garfield Station

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A woman died late Monday night after being struck by a New Jersey Transit train in southeast Garfield, according to NJ.com.

The fatal incident occurred on the tracks over Somerset Street, just north of Garfield Station, at around 10:25 p.m.

Few details have been released at this time, but NJ Transit spokesman Jim Smith said the train was out-of-service and carrying no passengers when it hit the female pedestrian.

The victim was pronounced deceased on the scene, confirmed officials.

No one else was reported injured.

According to the NJ Transit spokesman, the vacant train was in the process of being moved from Suffern, New York, to Hoboken.

An investigation into the circumstances and cause of the crash was underway.
