BERGEN COUNTY, NJ – A woman has been charged after firing shots at a police officer in a pursuit that ended on Interstate 287 in Mahwah on Wednesday.

According to RLS Media, the incident began when a Ringwood officer approached the Ford Explorer in Ringwood State Park on Sloatsburg Road in the neighboring county. The driver, Lakisha Maldonado, 30, began to drive away and hit the officer.

Another officer attempted to stop Maldonado but when she would not pull over, the officer gave pursuit. She drove onto I-287 and continued into Bergen County until her vehicle began to smoke. When officers approached the disabled SUV, she fired three rounds with a handgun.

None of the officers were injured by the gunfire.

Maldonado was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder, eluding, resisting arrest, and weapons charges.

The incident is still being investigated.
