UNION COUNTY, NJ – Two people were taken by helicopter from a car accident scene on the Garden State Parkway in Clark on Monday afternoon.

Patch.com reported that a Ford Explorer hit the righthand guardrail just before Exit 135 at about 4:10 p.m. The vehicle then hit a sign and ran off the road.

The driver had been able to get out of the smashed vehicle, but firefighters needed to use the Jaws of Life to extricate the passenger.

A helicopter landed in the Mother Seton Regional High School parking lot to take the victims to a hospital in Newark. They both suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The crash scene was cleared in just under an hour.
