OCEAN COUNTY, NJ — A 74-year-old Elizabeth man was been charged after fleeing the scene of a fatal pedestrian crash last Sunday in Toms River, according to local media.
The incident took place near Massachusetts Avenue and New Jersey Route 70 on October 23, at around 2:10 a.m.
An investigation found that the Elizabeth man was behind the wheel of a dark-colored Ford Explorer that struck the victim, a 28-year-old Manchester Township woman.
Toms River Police said officers arrived to find the victim lying in the roadway and suffering from serious injuries. By then, the driver had fled east on Route 70 toward Lakewood.
First responders rushed the victim to Southern Monmouth Medical Center, where she later died.
A witness was able to provide a description of the fleeing vehicle and the suspect, who had initially gotten out of his car to look at the victim before fleeing.
The suspect has since been identified and formally charged with the victim’s death. As of this writing, he has not been located and is listed as a “fugitive from justice.” A warrant is out for his arrest.
