UNION COUNTY, NJ — A 31-year-old man died early Saturday after being struck by a vehicle outside an Elizabeth bar.

City officials said the fatal incident occurred off Newark Avenue at about 3:00 a.m.

An early investigation indicates the man had just exited the business when he was hit by a vehicle that was traveling at a high rate of speed toward Newark Avenue.

Investigators said the vehicle continued traveling away from the scene for about a half mile down the road. After reaching Frelinghyusen Avenue in Newark, its driver got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

Though the vehicle’s plates were removed, officials have since identified the owner as a Newark resident.

As of Monday morning, no arrests or pending charges have been reported.
