OCEAN COUNTY, NJ — A 28-year-old woman died early Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle on Route 70 in Toms River, according to Daily Voice.

The fatal incident occurred near Massachusetts Avenue at approximately 2:10 a.m.

It was unclear what led up to the event, but a witness said the woman was struck by a dark-colored 2003-2009 Ford Explorer. An investigation indicates the driver got out of the SUV to look at the victim laying in the roadway before getting back in the vehicle and fleeing the scene.

First responders administered aid to the victim before rushing her to Southern Monmouth Medical Center. She later died as a result of her injuries, confirmed officials.

The suspect, described as a white male with a tall, thin build and “blonde or reddish hair,” has not been identified or located as of this writing.

The Ford Explorer, which was last seen traveling on Route 70 toward Lakewood, is believed to have damage to its front-passenger side, including a non-working headlight and hood damage.

An investigation by the Vehicular Homicide Unit of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Anthony Carrington at (732) 929-2027, ext. 3257.
