OCEAN COUNTY, NJ – One person is dead after a utility terrain vehicle went into Crystal Lake at a mining property in Manchester on Saturday night.
According to Nj.com, the victim was riding the UTV with three other people on the Heritage Mineral Mine property that is closed to the public when the accident happened at about 8:30 p.m. Emergency workers found 62-year-old James Grover still strapped to the vehicle in 25 feet of water in the groundwater aquifer that is referred to as Crystal Lake.
Grover died at the scene. It is believed that he died from drowning but an investigation into this death is being conducted.
The UTV’s driver and the other two passengers were not seriously injured.
The mining property, which covers about 7,000 acres, has several groundwater aquifers that are usually referred to as lakes. Unlike a natural lake, the aquifers at the former mining site are much more hazardous with drop-offs and unstable shorelines and bottoms. The public is urged to stay away from the place for safety reasons.
