DUMONT, NJ – Local police officers arrested an armed carjacker after the man crashed the stolen vehicle in Dumont late on Wednesday night.

According to Daily Voice, the incident began when the 19-year-old Uber Eats delivery driver in an SUV rear-ended an orange Dodge Challenger near the intersection of Madison Avenue and Washington Avenue at about 11 p.m. during Wednesday night’s snowstorm. When the victim exited the Dodge, an armed man and another man took the keys from him.

The armed driver then jumped into the Dodge and fled the scene. An officer later saw the vehicle, attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop, then pursued the car when the driver sped up.

The driver, identified as Abel Gomez-Pichardo, eventually crashed on the snowy roadway and fled on foot. He was captured in a residential area soon after.

The other suspect fled in the SUV.

Gomez-Pichardo is facing charges of carjacking, resisting arrest, and making terrorist threats, among other offenses.
