NJ traffic deaths spike as state reopens

NEW JERSEY – As the state reopens, NJ.com reports that traffic-related deaths are reaching pre-pandemic levels, even with fewer drivers on the road.

In May and June, 96 people were killed on New Jersey’s roads. That is well within the typical range for those two months in recent years, although many people are still restricting travel and working from home, and some businesses remain closed.

While fewer people than average died in fatal accidents in April, drivers have been engaging in riskier driving behavior over the last few months.

A spokesman for New Jersey State Police mentioned that many of the accidents troopers are responding to were the result of preventable behavior such as tailgating and aggressive driving.

July has already seen 21 road fatalities.. A senior director of the Governor’s Highway Safety Association has asked drivers to make good decisions on the road.
