CAMDEN COUNTY, NJ – A man died from an apparent drug overdose in police custody after a short chase and crash in Voorhees on Sunday.

According to NJ.com, police observed a vehicle in the parking lot of Voorhees Town Center. The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and crashed into a curve. Police pursued the driver as he fled on foot from the scene and were able to apprehend the 39-year-old man a short distance from the scene.

The suspect was struggling with the arresting officer, even after he was handcuffed, and the officer called for backup.

Shortly after being arrested, the man complained of not feeling well and the police asked for an ambulance which arrived in just a few minutes.

The suspect was transported to a Jefferson Stratford Hospital where he later died. His death appeared correlated with a bag of methamphetamines found in his vehicles.

The incident and the suspect’s death remains under investigation.
