NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – A man is facing charges of allegedly drinking and driving after a fiery car accident Saturday night that injured four people, including his two young children who were in the vehicle at the time.
According to NJ.com, the accident happened at about 9 p.m. in North Brunswick on Route 1, near Route 130.
The accused, Monmouth Junction man Christopher L. Mertens, 40, was operating a 2018 Infiniti Coupe when he crashed into the back of a 2003 Chevrolet Blazer. The Blazer then overturned and caught fire.
Mertens’ two children were taken to the hospital for the treatment of unspecified injuries.
The two occupants of the Blazer, a 19-year-old from Chesterfield and a 21-year-old woman from Suffern, New York, were taken to the hospital for treatment. The woman, the passenger in the vehicle, was later released.
Mertens is facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and assault by automobile.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the collision.
