A driver and passenger were inside a vehicle that had become disabled and was sitting in the right lane of the southbound turnpike. A pickup truck struck the disabled vehicle near mile-marker 106 at about 4:10 a.m.
The disabled vehicle was pushed into a cement barrier and the pickup truck overturned.
The driver of the disabled vehicle was seriously injured, and the pickup truck’s driver sustained moderate injuries. The passenger succumbed to his injuries.
The area was closed for about five hours while authorities worked at the scene.
An investigation is ongoing.
