A 16 year-old teenager died after he was struck by a tow truck while he was riding an electric scooter last Thursday, November 21.
Witnesses at the scene said that the crash occurred at around 8 p.m. at the commercial intersection of Elizabeth Avenue and South Spring Street. Surveillance video of the area showed that the tow truck was making a right-hand turn when it struck the victim on his e-scooter.
Witnesses added that the victim, identified as Nelson Gomez, remained face down on the ground and was not moving after the collision. Good Samaritans helped the teenager, but he unfortunately did not survive his injuries.
The truck driver remained at the scene and is cooperative with police.
Our heartfelt condolences go to the bereaved family. We understand the feeling of suddenly losing a loved one in a tragic accident. May they find the strength to move forward from this accident.
Motorcycle Accidents
Motorcycle crashes is another common cause of injuries and fatalities in the state of New Jersey. In a report published by the New Jersey State Police Fatal Accidents Investigation Unit, there were 591 recorded fatal crashes that occurred in 2017, which caused 624 fatalities. Of these 591 crashes, there were 81 fatal crashes involving 86 motorcycles.
In 158 of the 591 crashes, Driving While Intoxicated (alcohol and/or drugs) was listed as the major contributing factor. There were 174 people killed as a result of these 158 crashes. Speeding was another major contributing factor to these crashes being listed as a factor in 61 of the crashes. Driving while distracted seems to be the biggest factor as it was listed as a cause for 196 crashes.
We urge motor riders to observe and follow the laws while riding on the roadways, and to remain focused while on the road so that they can react accordingly to situations that may suddenly pop up on the roadway. Riders should be more careful when riding while visibility is low, and they should also check their motorcycles before going on the roadway, as incorrect tire pressure can make a motorcycle’s handling extremely bad. Being more diligent and prepared can help lessen accidents on the roads of New Jersey.
