According to NJ.com, the officer had just gotten back into his SUV after helping the driver of a disabled minivan near Exit 8A at about 4:50 a.m. The dump truck rear-ended the SUV, causing its airbags to deploy.
The officer was taken to an area hospital for treatment. He was complaining of neck and back pain but was not seriously injured. He was released on Monday.
The 26-year-old driver of the dump truck was not injured. The driver of the minivan also escaped without injury.
Authorities are continuing an investigation.
