GLOUCESTER COUNTY, NJ — A 42-year-old Harrisonville man has been charged after a wreck Tuesday, November 1, that killed a woman in Elk Township, reports NJ.com.

Authorities said the fatal collision occurred on Ellis Mill Road, near Gilman Lake, just before 7:00 p.m.

An early investigation indicates the man was behind the wheel of a pickup truck traveling westbound on the road when it struck an eastbound car head-on.

The driver of the eastbound car, a 56-year-old Gloucester Township woman, died as a result of her injuries.

Responding officers said the male driver displayed signs of intoxication at the scene, including slurred speech and watery, bloodshot eyes. The suspect, who failed to complete field sobriety tests, also admitted to an officer he had had “a couple of beers.”

Following the crash, the suspect was booked into Salem County Correctional Facility pending a detention hearing. Citing his lack of criminal record, a court public safety assessment has since allowed him to be released as he awaits trial. He is scheduled to appear in court for a pre-indictment conference on January 12.

The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office is leading an ongoing investigation.
