OCEAN COUNTY, NJ — A 28-year-old man died early Saturday after his car overturned off Hopper Avenue and into a marsh in Toms River, according to Daily Voice.

Toms River Police said the fatal accident happened near the intersection with South Shore Drive at about 2:25 a.m.

A preliminary investigation indicates the man was behind the wheel of a car traveling southbound at a high rate of speed on Hopper Avenue when he lost control. Moments later, the vehicle rolled into the body of water near the intersection.

Officials said two passengers were able to self-extricate, but the male driver was trapped in the submerged vehicle.

First responders worked to free the driver and rush him to Community Medical Center. Despite prolonged life-saving measures, the victim was pronounced deceased.

No information on the conditions of the other occupants has been shared.
