BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A 35-year-old New York man died Monday morning after a single-vehicle wreck on the Garden State Parkway in Township of Washington, according to Daily Voice.

The fatal accident occurred on the southbound parkway near milepost 167.7, approaching Washington Avenue. It was first reported at around 6:00 a.m.

New Jersey State Police said the man was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck on the right side of the roadway. At one point, for reasons still being investigated, the vehicle veered off the parkway and slammed into a group of trees before overturning.

Responding firefighters worked to extricate the male driver and sole occupant. Officials said a medical helicopter had initially been called, but was cancelled shortly after, when the victim was pronounced deceased.

A hazardous materials unit assisted fire crews as they attended to a leaking fuel tank.

A section of the southbound parkway was blocked off for nearly an hour and a half as NJSP investigated the cause of the wreck.

No further details have been made available at this time.
