NEWARK, NJ – A 7-year-old child was killed and several other residents were injured in a housefire in southern Newark early this morning, NJ.com reports.
Firefighters received word of a fire at a home on Astor Street at about 4:50 a.m. Thursday. They discovered the body of a 7-year-old boy on the building’s third floor.
Authorities say that the boy’s father had exited the building through the ground floor and had attempted to climb up a neighboring house and reenter the flaming building from the roof, where he became trapped. Firefighters used a ladder to rescue him.
Two adults and three children were transported to area hospitals for treatment. Another three adults and four children were displaced.
