Cherry Hill – Pedestrian Killed in Hit-And-Run
Police are on the look out for the driver involved in a fatal pedestrian accident that happened last Friday, October 25.
Cherry Hill police investigation the accident uncovered that the victim, identified as a resident of Cherry Hill was headed home and was walking along Chestnut Street and tried to cross Route 38 at around 4:45 a.m. when the accident happened. The victim was almost across the roadway, making it past three eastbound lanes and two westbound lanes before getting struck by a speeding vehicle. The victim died instantly.
The traffic at that intersection is always green for cars, unless a pedestrian presses a button to change the signal, police said. Video footage uncovered from a building nearby confirmed that the victim pressed the button to change the signal before crossing the street. The video also showed a dark-colored vehicle plowing through the red light, striking the victim at high speed.
Cherry Hill Police Chief William Monaghan was extremely disheartened, reporting that there have been two pedestrian accidents in Cherry Hill this week, with one fatality. Cherry Hill Police are still looking for the driver of the dark sedan that hit the victim.
First and foremost, we would like to send our condolences to the bereaved family. An accident that results in the death of a loved one can be hard to process. We understand the grief and anger they may be feeling. Pedestrian accidents are unfortunately, more often deadly than not. A pedestrian does not have any protection from a speeding vehicle that may hit them. According to a report from the New Jersey State Police Fatal Accident Investigation Unit, in 2017, there were 179 pedestrian crashes with 183 fatalities. A fourth of these pedestrian crashes were due to pedestrian violations, while half of them happened because of driver’s inattention. We urge drivers to be more vigilant on the road in order to stop or yield properly to pedestrians crossing the street. We also urge pedestrians to be more careful when crossing the road and to stay cautious as there are negligent drivers who may be driving unsafely.
