A pedestrian was stuck by a vehicle Thursday morning in the westbound lane of Route 38 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
Police investigating the accident said the crash happened at around 8 a.m. in the morning in between Chapel Avenue and Cuthbert Boulevard. A Witness of the accident said the victim was trying to cross the road and was nearly across when the victim was suddenly hit by the vehicle.
The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries and is expected to recover without any problems. Route 38 was closed for an hour while police investigated. It was reopened just before 9 a.m. Investigation around the accident is still ongoing.
We are extremely happy that the victim only suffered minor injuries in this accident and we hope for the victim’s speedy recovery. Pedestrian accidents are often a scary incident. Pedestrians do not have any protection from a vehicle that may hit them. This is why victims in pedestrian accidents suffer from severe injuries in most cases. According to a report from the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety, speeding was a contributing factor in 27 percent of fatal crashes. Their report also says that distracted driving is a behavior dangerous to drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. These distractions include talking or texting on a cell phone, eating, drinking a beverage, and programming/looking at a GPS. In 2015, an estimated 391,000 people were injured while they were driving with distractions.
We urge pedestrians to observe and obey laws, and to be more vigilant while on the road. A distracted driver may not be able to stop even if the pedestrian is crossing on a designated crosswalk. We would also like to remind drivers to be more cautious of obstacles on the road, and to avoid distractions while driving. We can all help ensure a safer road for everyone.
