PITTSGROVE TOWNSHIP, NJ (SALEM COUNTY) – Two drivers were killed and an adult and two children were injured in a multi-vehicle crash involving a school bus in Salem County on Friday, according to the Daily Voice and NJ.com.

The collision happened on Route 540 near milepost 28.5 at around 4 p.m., when the driver of a Nissan Murano drifted into the lane of oncoming traffic. There, it crashed into an International 3000 school bus carrying 19 children from Olivet Elementary School in Elmer. The bus and Murano then crashed into a Volkswagen Jetta, and the impact sent all three vehicles off the right side of the roadway.

The driver of the Murano, 70-year-old Pittsgrove resident Pearl Caudill, died at the scene.

The bus driver, 60-year-old Newfield woman Denise Powell, was airlifted to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

The third driver was taken to the hospital in Vineland for the treatment of moderate injuries.

Two of the schoolchildren were hospitalized with non-critical wounds.

Authorities continue to investigate the accident at this time.
